Elephants have extremely mobile and powerful trunks powered by 150,000 bundles of muscle fibers. African elephants have two prehensile fingers at the end of their trunk, while Asian elephants have only one. An elephant's trunk is as versatile as a Swiss Army knife. Elephants use their trunks to analyze smells, to suck up water, to support themselves, to pull up trees or to spray themselves with fresh mud. To eat, the elephant wraps its trunk around leaves or grasses, then tears them off and carries them to its mouth. An adult elephant can swallow up to 150 kilograms of greenery a day. Elephants can even use their trunks to produce words resembling human speech. To do this, they put their trunk in their mouth and place it on their tongue. Elephants can use their trunks to move objects weighing up to 300 kg.
